CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

We believe in …

Open and Honest Relationships
Establishing and maintaining productive relationships is at the heart of everything we do. We work as a team with our colleagues who include other development professionals, U-M faculty and staff, and donors. Fostering positive connections helps us achieve our goals of building a stronger University.

Passion for the University of Michigan Mission
We understand and enthusiastically support the University’s mission of creating, communicating and disseminating knowledge.

Delivering Memorable Customer Experiences
We continually review our work through the eyes of our customers—both internal and external—and go out of our way to anticipate and exceed their expectations. Whether it’s a million-dollar donor, an IT staffer or a faculty member, we work in partnership to make sure all our outcomes are "win-win."

About U-M Development

What is development—and who does it?
Development means fundraising and the activities that support it. At Michigan, development includes professionals in major gifts, alumni relations, special events, communications, research, estate planning and more.

How does Michigan “do” development?
U-M’s approach to fundraising is donor-centered. Development staff work collegially across the University to build relationships with donors that benefit them and advance Michigan’s mission.

What does Michigan look for in its development staff?
U-M is always looking for talented professionals to join the development team. We seek people who are highly motivated, good at building relationships with others and who strive to meet the expectations of donors and colleagues. If you want to make a difference in the lives of individuals and in the future of a world-class research institution, you should consider joining our team.

Where do Michigan’s development professionals work?
About 450 people work in development at Michigan, with about 140 in the Office of University Development and the remainder working in the University’s 19 schools and colleges and 22 units. Development staff work at U-M’s main campus in Ann Arbor, as well as at the U-M campuses in Flint and Dearborn.

U-M’s development offices vary in size and structure, depending on the needs of the school, college or unit. Typically, directors of development report to their dean or center director. Unit development teams may include staff in major gifts, annual giving, communications, stewardship and alumni relations. The Office of University Development (OUD) includes professionals in these areas, with all OUD staff ultimately reporting to Vice President for Development Jerry A. May.
