CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Robert W. Groves, Associate Vice President for Development and Campaign Director

Bob Groves

Bob joined the University of Michigan in April 2004. A veteran of major capital campaigns at three other major public Universities, Bob brings an extensive background in major gift fundraising and development management to the University. He is highly committed to advancing higher education and the development profession. While he takes his work seriously, he is widely known for using his healthy sense of humor along with a direct, fair, and open approach to issues and people, to build strong teams and conduct effective fundraising programs.

Bob came to Michigan from the University of Minnesota where he served as the Vice President for Development for the Minnesota Medical Foundation since June of 1996. In this role he was responsible for all fundraising programs of the Foundation, which supports the Medical Schools in the Twin Cities and Duluth, the School of Public Health, the Minnesota Cancer Center and many other interdisciplinary programs of the Academic Health Center at the University of Minnesota. While at the Foundation, Bob played a major role in designing and leading the Medicine and Public Health portion of the university-wide, Campaign Minnesota, which raised more than $516 Million between 1996 and June of 2003. The Medicine and Public Health portion of the campaign exceeded its original goal by 72% and raised more money in the seven years of the campaign than the previous 108 years of the Medical School's existence. Campaign Minnesota raised a total of more than $1.6 Billion for the University of Minnesota.

From April 1990 to May 1996 Bob held several development positions including the Executive Director of University Development at Penn State University, the Director of Foundation and Development at Wright State University, and various development appointments at Ohio State University.

Bob is a graduate of The Ohio State University and has held numerous volunteer positions and has participated in a wide range of community activities. Some of those include:

  • Board of Directors, Chair of Resource Development, No Place Like Home Communities.
  • Chairman, National Tuberous Sclerosis Association Board of Trustees from 1996-1998.

Bob and his wife Kathy, a computer applications trainer and consultant, celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in 2002. They have three sons, Rob, Rick and Ryan. Bob, Kathy and Ryan reside in Brighton, Michigan.
