Background:
The Life Sciences Institute is a newly established, free-standing biomedical research institute at the University of Michigan . The mission of the Institute is to make a difference in human health through collaborative scientific discovery. The Institute is comprised of 26 faculty members (and their teams) from a broad range of scientific disciplines and representing multiple schools and colleges at the University. The faculty laboratories are housed in a state-of-the-art laboratory without walls located at a cross roads between the medical and central campuses in Ann Arbor . The Institute faculty are assisted by a small professional staff of science administrators in the areas of grants and finance; human resources; communication; information technology, scientific buying and facility operations.
To realize its mission, the Institute is seeking someone to lead its efforts to fund its innovative programs and to develop business partnerships and catalyze commercialization efforts flowing from Institute technologies and projects. As a new organizational model for academic scientific research, the Institute requires new models for generating research support. The Chief of Research Business Development will help to create and realize funding opportunities and relationships that capitalize upon and fit with the specific research mission of the Institute.
Position Objectives:
The primary objective for this position is to devise and deploy strategies to increase financial support for Institute research. Initially, the focus will be on gaining participation in a fund dedicated to supporting projects at the critical juncture between government support and private investment. The Chief of Business Research Development will work with members of the LSI Advisory Board and Leadership Council to identify and recruit additional donors for the fund.
The Chief of Business Research Development will also be a key advisor to projects supported by the fund. In this regard, he or she will work throughout the funding life cycle to assist in choosing, structuring and guiding projects with commercialization potential. This position will work with the University legal and technology transfer offices to help capture intellectual property flowing from funded projects and to identify and execute "exit" strategies for funded projects through licenses, spin outs, etc. He or she will work closely with the scientific team and with University resources in entrepreneurship to assist in writing business plans, finding financing and performing other tasks necessary to help projects achieve success.
Secondary objectives of the position are to work more generally with Institute faculty and centers to identify and realize additional opportunities for research funding and technology development. The Chief of Research Business Development will be responsible for developing relationships with individuals, corporations and foundations with an interest in funding biomedical research for philanthropic or business aims. He or she will also stay apprised of government and other sources of grant support for research. This position will work with the University and unit development offices in identifying and stewarding individuals and groups that may support the LSI. This position will also work closely with the communications area at the LSI in developing strategies and materials on business development opportunities.
Position Specifics:
This position reports to the Managing Director of the Institute. The position will require a fair amount of domestic and international travel.

- Ability to/knowledge of licensing and new corporation formation
- Able to travel frequently and attend meetings outside normal business hours
- Competency in effective organizational navigation
Experience/Credentials:
- Scientific background (through study or experience or both)
- Experience with individual donor fundraising
- Experience with business development (licensing, sponsored research, start-ups, tech transfer)
