Position summary:
The Director of Development and External Relations reports directly to the Dean and serves on the School's management team, providing leadership and strategic management of all fundraising and external relations for the University of Michigan School of Information.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement an expanded and comprehensive development and external relations program, with an emphasis on corporate and foundation relations, major gifts, and public relations.
  • Lead and manage the Development, Alumni Relations and Communications team (5 FTE), providing supervision and mentorship and fostering teamwork and collaboration.
  • Develop short and long term strategic goals and objectives in relation to current and newly identified priorities and opportunities.
  • Oversee and manage annual and campaign fundraising, stewardship activities including donor and scholarship events, alumni communication, participation, and giving, and corporate and foundation relations.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift prospects, with an emphasis on gifts of $100K and above, working proactively and cooperatively with the University's Central Development office and with other Schools and Colleges.
  • Collaboratively plan and implement school-wide communications initiatives with consistent messages, a clear identity and branding in online and print materials.
  • Coordinate media services across key functions within the school and for the school as a whole including web site, online and print publications, marketing and communications.
  • Plan and direct the solicitation of prospects by the Dean, President, Provost, and Vice President for Development.
  • Personally interact with and cultivate high level prospects for gift-giving.
  • Provide executive staff support to the Dean related to fundraising activities, including strategic planning for the Dean's fundraising travel, providing briefing materials for meetings and visits, and drafting correspondence and speeches.
  • Assess and evaluate efforts and outcomes of development and external relations activities.
  • Provide regular data analyses and written reports on development progress and activities.
  • Prepare budget proposals and reports and demonstrate fiscal responsibility.
  • Represent the School and the University at designated functions and events.

 

Skills & Qualifications:

  • The preferred candidate will have extensive knowledge and experience and a substantial record of achievement in the area of corporate and foundation relations and major gifts, with five to seven years of experience in academic fundraising at a School or University with a comprehensive development program, or the equivalent experience in relationship building and business development in an Information Technology or related field.
  • Management experience is required.
  • Experience in external relations, communications, and/or public relations preferred.
  • Strong understanding of and enthusiasm for the Information and Information Technology fields and industries.
  • Substantial knowledge of foundation and corporate missions, goals, cultures, and organizational reporting.
  • Ability to serve as an effective spokesperson for SI and to effectively communicate the School's mission, diverse and progressive areas of expertise, and future potential.
  • Excellent collaboration skills and proven ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse constituents including University Development Officers, development officers in other Schools and Colleges, executive officers, board members, school leadership, faculty, alumni, and external partners.
  • Ability to analyze prospects for interest match with School programs and priorities; and to assess and determine solicitation approach with respect to size of ask, areas of interest, and timing of solicitations with compelling needs within the School.
  • Proven success in gift closure at the six-and seven-figure level is expected.
  • The successful candidate will have excellent communication, interpersonal, presentation and organizational skills. S/he will have demonstrated creative problem solving skills, excellent judgment, high standards for professional ethics and personal integrity, and will be flexible, self-motivated, and results oriented.
  • Knowledge of University policies, procedures, and cultures is desired.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and to work outside the normal workday.
