Position Description
The Senior Director will lead all fundraising efforts to increase support for the departments, centers and institutes which includes areas such as Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology and the Kellogg Eye Center, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Pathology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Surgery and Urology, the Transplant Center, the A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute, the Basic Sciences, the Geriatrics Center, University Hospital and many other centers and institutes that support translational medicine across the Health System. The Senior Director will manage and solicit a portfolio of major gift prospects and lead of team of ten or more development staff in support of the Departments, Centers and Institutes. The Senior Director will oversee an Advisory Board.
Supervises Directly: Directors, Associate Directors, Major Gift Officers and Administrative Staff
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
* Implement a comprehensive multi-year fundraising plan to significantly increase philanthropic support for the Departments, Centers and Institutes at the University of Michigan Health System.
* Personally maintain a portfolio of major gift / planned giving prospects, maintaining frequent contact with prospects, university leaders, and volunteers. Plan systematic, appropriate and effective solicitation strategies for major and planned gift prospects.
* Increase philanthropic support for research, translational science, faculty support and patient care for the benefit of the University of Michigan Health System.
* Provide guidance for fundraising committees and related events and activities led by volunteers and others in support of Departments, Centers and Institutes fundraising activities.
* Provide strategic direction in partnership with key stakeholders to optimize fundraising.
* Lead, inspire and coordinate the efforts of the Departments, Centers and Institutes Development team, including overseeing/promoting their productivity, teamwork and professional development.
* Provide staff coaching, mentoring and professional development opportunities that increase capabilities and create an environment of engagement.
* In conjunction with Directors and Associate Directors, create annual plans for fundraising in coordination and collaboration with Departmental Chairs, Departmental Administrative Officers, Center and Institute Chiefs and Directors, Hospital Administrators and key faculty leaders.
* Maintain strong lines of communication with colleagues in other Health System and Medical School units, the Offices of University Development, and appropriate schools and colleges across the University to ensure effective collaboration and synergy in achieving fundraising goals and objectives.
* Ensure collaboration among development personnel in identifying referral opportunities and supporting the overall Health System campaign goals.
* Oversee the development and implementation of comprehensive, timely and innovative stewardship, as well as appropriate annual fund and special gifts programs.
* Provide guidance to Associate Directors and Gift Officers in supporting fundraising committees and related events and activities led by volunteers.
* Through collegial consultation and cooperation, demonstrate and be a model of collaboration in the development community, while representing Health System Development values and its unique role at the University of Michigan.
* Develop and maintain strong relationships with colleagues throughout the Health System and University, by demonstrating leadership in the development community.
* Coordinate and facilitate activity that will directly result in prospect identification, engagement and successful solicitations, including advising chairs, department heads and development colleagues on the culture, expectations and needs of medical development constituents.
* Have a comprehensive understanding of the Health Development and Departments, Centers and Institutes priorities.
Required Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree.
* Demonstrated ability to exercise a high degree of judgment and diplomacy, and an impeccable commitment to confidentiality is required, as well as highest integrity and ethics.
* Ten or more years of progressively responsible development experience.
* Demonstrated success in raising capital, program support and endowment gifts.
* Experience working in a complex environment similar to the Health System, with proven experience with securing $1M gifts.
* Excellent written and communication skills with an engaging, genuine and mature personal style.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as, a proven record of working collaboratively and diplomatically with others is necessary.
* Demonstrated ability to effectively manage, motivate and mentor major gift officers.
*Demonstrated ability to think strategically in a complex academic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
* Master's degree.
* Knowledge of the University of Michigan organization, policies and procedures.
* Ability to work in a matrix organization and exercise influence to achieve results.
*Experience in an academic health system setting with a comprehensive development program.
*Experience working with donor boards.
