Position Description
The Director is responsible for the creation and implementation of a comprehensive, collaborative, and sustainable annual giving program for the Michigan Athletic Department; this includes the support of all teams and other department-wide identified priorities. This Director will also develop and maintain a tradition of intergenerational responsibility and giving amongst all former and current student athletes.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Creation of an Annual Giving Program
The Director is responsible for:
- Conducting a comprehensive review of the current Victors Club program, specifically identifying strengths and opportunities for growth in the program
- Developing a strategic communication plan (e.g., cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship) for all victors club members
- Identifying and soliciting all victors club members utilizing the available mediums (e.g., print, electronic, phone, social media)
- Collaborating with the Office of University Development and athletics teams (e.g., marketing, athletic communications, and sport administration) as necessary to move annual giving strategies forward
- Binding metrics to measure the success of annual fund initiatives, specifically establishing and implementing standards of reporting and accountability to measure the progress of the annual giving goals against dollar and activity goals
Engagement of Former and Current Student Athletes
The Director is responsible for:
- Designing and implementing messaging and programmatic initiatives that foster a pathway to philanthropy for student athletes at U-M as part of a long-term strategic plan
- Developing a student ambassador program as a cultivation and stewardship tool for major donors
- Developing a student athlete connection program with the goal of connecting the Athletic Department with former student athletes. The primary objectives are to:
- Gather meaningful insights regarding alumni?s thoughts on their time as a student
athlete and the current state of the Athletic Department
- Record feedback from former student athletes on what they believe to be important
to the sustainability of the Athletic Department
- Update current records
- Binding metrics around student engagement and giving
Management of Support Staff and Programs
The Director is responsible for:
- Managing the assistant director, coordinator, and student athlete connectors. This includes providing leadership, setting and evaluating individual goals, developing and sustaining appropriate training, mentoring, and monitoring of primary focus area
- Building a high functioning team, providing staff with clear roles, responsibilities, accountabilities, mentoring, and support to be successful as a team
- Participating in Athletic Development events as appropriate including, but not limited to, home and away football games activities, on and off-campus donor events, and other athletic activities as needed
- Working in partnership with the Senior Associate Athletic Director
- Summarizing and reporting on all annual giving campaign activities to athletic department senior leadership
- Developing and managing the budget for the annual giving and student athlete engagement programs
- Serving as a member of the Development Leadership Team to promote a culture of growth and learning
- Performing other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors degree required, master degree preferred.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills with ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and advance strategic plans and programs that support the Athletic Department mission and contribute to the overall goals and objectives of the fundraising program.
- Excellent communications skills, coupled with strong writing and presentation skills, as well as the ability to present before a group.
- Strong commitment to the student athlete experience
- Demonstrated ability to develop good working relationships with internal and external constituency groups and to work collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment.
- Sound organizational ability, a high degree of energy creativity and initiative; the ability to project the unique aims and values of the University of Michigan and its donors and alumni.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities and meet challenging and changing deadlines.
- Discretion and an ability to interact with high-level donors and the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- High-level experience with social networking tools (such as Facebook, Twitter, InCircle, MySpace, LinkedIn, etc.). Ability to develop and implement applications within the applications.
