Position Description

The Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy invites applications for a newly created "Director of Advancement" position. The director of advancement will lead the school's fundraising and external relations activities, and dramatically raise the school's visibility as the University prepares to celebrate 100 years of policy education in 2014. We invite applications from proven leaders with exceptional people and project management skills, demonstrated fund- and friend-raising capabilities, and a passion for solving pressing societal challenges through effective, well-crafted public policy.

Reporting to the dean of the Ford School, the director of advancement will be an essential member of the dean's advisory team, setting the strategic direction for all fundraising and external relations to raise the school's profile. This newly restructured position will enable us to expand and deepen understanding of the Ford School and its myriad accomplishments among new and existing constituencies, and to secure the public and private support essential to fulfill the school's mission.

The director will be responsible for designing and implementing strategies to expand the school's prospect pool, identify and pursue prospects for the school's campaign priorities, solicit major gifts, steward major gift benefactors, and plan the solicitation of prospects by the dean. In collaboration with the dean and the school's senior leadership, the director will develop and oversee the implementation of a strategic marketing plan, establishing creative short- and long-term strategies and goals to enhance the school's external recognition, public image, and relationships with stakeholders. This will include leveraging the expertise of faculty, alumni, and others to increase external visibility and relationships. The director will lead the school's communications and outreach activities, collaborating with the Ford School's Offices of Student & Academic Services, Graduate Career Services, and Alumni Relations, as well as the University's development and communications offices to integrate internal and external communications for the school and bolster existing communications resources.
