Gifts by Mail, Transfer, or Payroll Deduction

Securities

Advantages of Gifts of Securities

  • You get an income tax deduction based on the value of the securities at the time you make the gift.
  • You avoid capital gains tax on the appreciated value of the securities.
  • The University can immediately use the proceeds for the purpose you specify or for general support of essential initiatives.

Valuation
The value of your gift will be the average of the high and the low trading prices on the official date of your gift. The date of gift is the day the University assumes ownership of the security.

In Kind

Gifts in kind are non-monetary items of tangible personal property or other physical assets that represent value to the University. Examples might include books, artwork, and equipment. If you believe you have a potential gift in kind, please call the Office of Gift Administration Gift Help Line for further information toll free at 1-888-518-7888, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday, Eastern time, or email umgift@umich.edu.

Your gift may provide you with federal and state income tax benefits:

  • If you itemize deductions on your federal income tax return, you may be able to deduct your contribution to U-M from your adjusted gross income. In addition, gifts of appreciated property avoid long term capital gains tax. Check with your tax advisor for deduction and capital gains tax requirements and limitations for your situation.
  • Your state may also allow a credit or deduction. For example, Michigan residents may take a credit against state tax of 50 cents for each dollar of their gift to U-M, with a maximum tax credit of $100 for taxpayers filing singly or $200 on a joint return.

Use of Your Gift

If you wish to designate your gift for a specific purpose: To ensure that your intentions are fulfilled, we encourage you to talk with a representative of the Development staff from the school or college you want to receive your gift. If you don't specify a purpose: The school or college that you have designated to receive the gift will use your gift as unrestricted support for areas of greatest need.
