Development and Fundraising

Development Defined

What is development? It’s often used as a synonym for fundraising. But at Michigan, development is about more than money: it’s about a lifelong commitment to learning, leading and caring for others.

  • “During my first year at Michigan State’s College of Law I organized a group of students to create a criminal law clinic on campus—a program unique to the state. D-SIP’s focus on being a leader in my community through philanthropy inspired me to organize and direct these efforts.”
    —Zachary Risk, D-SIP ’07
  • “Hearing donors speak about their philanthropic interests and reasons for giving has encouraged me to think about how I can make a difference in my community and the missions I support.”
    —Cynthia Chan, D-SIP ’09
  • “I consistently rely on the theories and practical lessons from D-SIP to find success in my work as a U-M fundraiser.”
    —Malika Middlebrooks, D-SIP ’08

Eleven of our first 40 alumni have found great jobs in development, and many more are putting their D-SIP skills to work in similarly fulfilling careers.

Apply today, and you could join the next generation of great D-SIP leaders.
