David C. Munson, Jr.
The Board of Regents appointed
David C. Munson, Jr. as Robert
J. Vlasic Dean of Engineering,
effective July 1. Munson is
professor and chair of the
Department of Electrical Engineering
and Computer Science.
Munson is highly regarded for his research in digital signal
and image processing and is the author or co-author of more
than 160 professional publications. He has spent much of
his career working on imaging systems, especially synthetic
aperture radar (SAR), which produces high-resolution,
broad-area imaging. Munson and colleagues devised a new
method for Earth-based SAR imaging of the moon and interior
planets. He was also part of a group of scientists who
created a lensless camera that produces imagery that is in
focus at all depths.

C. Olivia Frost, professor and
associate dean for academic
affairs at the School of Information,
was appointed the
School's interim dean, effective
June 1. She has been a faculty
member at Michigan since 1977.
Frost's research focuses on the
organization of information,
with an emphasis on nontextual
materials, and the retrieval of digital image information. Her
most recent initiatives are in cultural heritage outreach. She
is principal investigator of the Cultural Heritage Initiative
for Community Outreach, a research and service program
which uses digital technologies to broaden the reach of cultural
heritage materials to general and youth audiences.
