Opportunities for Personal Giving
The School of Art & Design is being driven forward by many factors, among them a persistent spirit of innovation, the quickened pace of technology, and deliberate, careful strategies. Looking ahead we have identified the following major areas of need. Each one represents an opportunity for donors to make a significant contribution to the School's future.
Faculty Endowments at Every Level:
- Professorships $1,200,000+
- Visiting Professorships $750,000
- Assistant Professorships $500,000
We are always seeking faculty with strong skills in traditional media. However, we now have a new challenge before us. In these times of advancing technology, with disciplinary boundaries dissolving, we must recruit faculty who are hybrids, capable of walking between the disciplines. We need to find people who can communicate comfortably with engineers and poets alike. Needless to say, these individuals are in great demand. Industry wants them. Academia wants them. We want them.
Student Aid:
- Dean's Merit Scholarships for Undergraduate Students
- Design and Fine Arts Awards for Outstanding Student Work
- Undergraduate Financial Assistance
- Endowed Graduate Fellowships
In these times of escalating tuition costs, with families under increasing economic pressures, the School of Art & Design has an obligation to provide its students with financial support in a variety of forms: scholarships, awards for their work, and loans.
Research:
- Summer Research Program/Summer Design Camp
- Research Fellowships in the Arts
- Faculty Development Awards
As part of a great research university, the School of Art & Design is expected to make meaningful scholarly contributions. Excellence and innovation in research can best be encouraged by strong funding for both faculty and student efforts.
New Program Initiatives:
- Visiting Artists & Designers
- Students Shows & Exhibitions
- International Exchange Program in Kyoto, Japan
- Lecture Series
- Student Travel to Museums
- Michigan Integrated Design Initiative (MIDI)
Slusser Gallery Renovation:
We want to upgrade the Gallery to make it a regional center for contemporary art. The Gallery, located in our building on North Campus, serves several important functions. The venue provides an opportunity for students and faculty to exhibit their work to the public at large. Thanks to an endowment, set up by Barbara and Dean Richardson, the School is also able to bring in the work of visiting and well-known artists. The Slusser Gallery also serves to draw the community closer to the School by giving form and substance to our efforts.
Equipment:
- Computers, video equipment, lasers, and other multimedia and visualization systems
- Technical integration and classroom/studio upgrades throughout the School
Electronic tools become obsolete quickly. In a public domain such as the School, computers last for months rather than years. An Endowed Technology Fund would enable the School to refresh its technology on a regular basis and host visiting lecturers and researchers who are knowledgeable in the fast-changing and extremely important field of endeavor in the visual arts and design.
