WHERE YOUR GIFT IS NEEDED
University of Michigan Museum of Art
Considered one of the finest university art museums in the country, the University of Michigan Museum of Art seeks to transform individual and civic life by promoting the discovery, contemplation, and enjoyment of the art of our world.
Its holdings, representing more than 150 years of art collecting at the University of Michigan, include:
- Over 18,000 objects from the Western, Asian, and African traditions
- Works by most of the great masters and representing the key schools and movements in these cultures; its collections of works by Whistler and Picasso, East Asian paintings and ceramics, and Congolese sculpture are among the finest in North America
The Museum of Art has garnered increasing regional and national attention for the vibrancy of its exhibitions, education programs, scholarship, and publications. In 2003 the New York Times called it "in the forefront" of university art museums taking on intellectually rigorous, interdisciplinary projects that also manage to engage broad audiences.

The Michigan Difference
As part of the University of Michigan's capital campaign, The Michigan Difference, UMMA has embarked on a $35.4 million fundraising campaign – the largest in its history.
- This campaign will bring to fruition the long-awaited expansion and renovation of Alumni Memorial Hall, which will more than double the size of the museum and achieve a space worthy of its path-breaking scholarship, exhibitions, and programs.
- The campaign will overcome the physical limitations of the current building, which prohibit the Museum from displaying more than 3 or 4 percent of its collections at any one time
- The campaign will also help to secure the Museum's long-term financial well-being through important additions to the Museum's endowments.
Through the generosity of those who support the Museum's mission, this transformation will make possible new projects and possibilities yet undreamed, all built upon a foundation of excellence and a tradition of University and community partnership. The Museum's renovation and expansion will foster a new kind of university art museum for Ann Arbor and the nation, enabling it to respond to increased public interest and to enhance its role as a research and teaching resource for disciplines across the University.
Construction is Underway
During this time, the Museum is operating a temporary exhibition space called UMMA Off/Site.
- Location: immediately adjacent to the University’s central campus at the corner of South University and South Forest
- Exhibitions: this lively loft gallery will be presenting exhibitions devoted to photography, film, and video
- Activities: a modest museum Shop can be found here, and we’re offering public programs including tours and special events
