Student Publications' Mission
The mission of the Office of Student Publications is to provide both an educational experience for students in the area of mass communications and an effective medium for student communication on campus.

The successful mission calls for a balanced governance structure. It requires a Board for Student Publications that can protect the educational experience of future generations of students by dealing with the problems of long-term viability. At the same time the Board must protect the educational experience of current students by permitting and protecting student control of daily management, especially over editorial decisions.

The Office of Student Publications encompasses The Michigan Daily, the Michiganensian and the Gargoyle.

Building Renovation
The Student Publication Building, built over more than 70 years ago, is in dire need of upgraded electrical, telephone and computer network wiring; accessible restrooms and office space and an elevator; modern fire alarm and suppression systems; refurbished windows, roof tiles, floors and walls; and furniture to replace the 1950s desks and chairs that have served well for over more than 50 years. The architect's estimate for renovation is $6 million. It is the Board's intention to maintain the historic character and personality of the building, including the stained glass, the arched newsroom ceiling and the tiled walls. The major focus of our development effort is to raise the funds for this renovation.

Scholarships
The Michigan Daily and the Gargoyle each have small, endowed scholarships to provide tuition assistance to publication staff members who have demonstrated excellent work effort and a financial need. These funds are able to provide stipends of $500 to $2,000 for a small number of students each year. A second goal of our development effort is to raise enough funds to provide larger and additional scholarships to all students who need tuition support to allow them to work at a student publication.

Programs
With no journalism department at the University of Michigan, the various student publications provide the best laboratory experience for students to learn the skills needed to write, edit, photograph and sell advertising for newspapers, magazines and other publications. Among the many ideas for enhancing this experience is one to establish workshops or visiting journalist programs to provide the student staff exposure to practicing journalists, photojournalists, and business staff. A third goal of our development effort is to create and fund programs to bring these individuals to the University.

Archive
The Michigan Daily has been published for over more than 113 years. Bound volumes and microfilm are available at the Student Publications Building and libraries on the University of Michigan campus. For the last several years, the Daily has provided access to recent issues through its website. Taking advantage of new technology, Student Publications is undertaking a joint venture with the University Library to digitize and make accessible all the issues of the Daily from 1890. This archive will be available on the web for all students, prospective students, staff, faculty, alumni and other researchers to read, study and investigate. This is the fourth goal of our development effort: to create a digital archive of The Michigan Daily.
