The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute provides unparalleled research on a broad array of transportation issues. More than 700 short- and long-term research projects have been carried out with funding from federal and state government agencies, motor vehicle manufacturers and suppliers, and other organizations.

During the past thirty-five years, the interdisciplinary research conducted at UMTRI resulted in findings and recommendations that have benefited people throughout the world, including:

  • Notable enhancements to the interiors and exteriors of motor vehicles;
  • Improved understanding of operational performance and improved design of heavy trucks;
  • Safer and easier to drive motor vehicles;
  • More efficient and environmentally friendly manufacturing practices;
  • Significant evolution of maritime systems; and
  • New laws that reduce behaviors proven to increase accidents and injury.
